How To Wear A Summer Shirt

While the catwalks of Milan, London, Paris and New York provide the inspiration for what we wear, it is the High Street who brings that vision to life for the mass market of you and I. What To Wear For Spring Summer 2017 is my guide to what is going to be HOT! Since following trends can be an expensive hobby let Fashionable Frank eliminate potential fashion faux pas’ and provide clarity with fashion fact! Set back, relax and enjoy the fashion show!

The issues to consider with new trends are colour and clothes. You can be “on trend” by choosing the colours that are forecasted to be popular OR you can wear the clothes which will be considered fashionable. For Spring Summer 2017 there are some new updates regarding colour and they are tonal outfits, use of stone and pink along with camoflauge. In terms of clothing the concensus is printed wide collared shirtswide leg trousers, statement bombers along with light wash denim jackets (and jeans) are the “go-to” pieces for Spring Summer 2017. It is worth noting that one is independent of the other for example not many men are going to wear wide leg trousers in pink! Occasionally you will have the colours and clothes of the season available in a one brilliant piece for example Zara Man Stone Chinos or a Pink Suede Bomber.

Stone, the sandy colour that sits nicely on the fence between beige and white was a big trend in SS 16. The popularity of this colour is partly due to the refusal of some men to wear pants or jeans. The good news about Stone is the colour transcends both smart and casual. It looks great as a suit however it is also a great alternative when seeking sun-friendly colour alternatives in chinos, trousers or jeans. Stone proved popular with Designers like Giorgio Armani and Valentino on the catwalks in January and February.

Stone is a great colour for a suit especially if you have a wedding or dapper events to attend. Break away from the blues and grays with this sharp Stone alternative from River Island. Shop the suit here. Stone Bomber Jackets and Knitted Polos are also great pieces to add to your wardrobe.

The Bomber Jacket is once again going to be popular for SS 17, add a Stone coloured one for a trend led outfit. My pick is from Burton Menswear and is only €68! The contrast collar adds a funky point of interest to your outfit.

Pink has been popular for a few years but the dusty pink hue is destined to dominate as temperatures soar. The colour is used across a wide variety of clothing for example Denim Jackets, Bombers and Hoodies for Spring and t-shirts and shorts for high Summer. Pink in a linen fabric is a great idea for your Spring Summer Sartorial choices. Pink was popular on the catwalks with Gucci and Topman Design.

This ZARA BOMBER is only €39.95 and is perfect for SS17. The Lightweight fabric along with the dusty pink tone means you will get a lot of wear out of it. I wear it with a pair check grey slim fit trousers, white trainers and white t-shirt.

Pink Chinos are a great way to add a splash of colour to your SS17 outfits. Team with a white tee or shirt and white trainers and you have a new classic look! These are from Zara and are a bargain at only €39.95.

Camo is back for another colour tour of duty! Get the trend right and it will serve you with honour. Camo is available in a wide range of clothing so choose wisely when buying. I think a Camo bomber or Jumper will be enough for you. For High Summer go for Camo T-Shirt, swim shorts and vests BUT do not wear them together! Please!

While Camo is a trend for SS17  I recommend avoid splashing out heavily on it. Go for something you will get a lot of use out of. This Zara T-Shirt is ideal. I love the understated print on this. Stripes are always popular in Summer opting for this T-Shirt will add a really funky piece to your outfits and its only €19.95! No excuse not to buy!

Diego Simone Tonal OutfitTonal Outfits are simply wearing the same colour BUT in different shades. Think Diego Simone here, the dapper Atletico Madrid hell raiser has been rocking the tonal look for years! Tonal Navy outfits are popular for 2017 just remember to vary the shades. Tonal will work well for casual and in particular formal outfits. Tonal Grey Outfits are very popular as well!

As mentioned earlier KEY CLOTHING PIECES change almost every year with something new becoming trendy. As you can guess Spring Summer 2017 is no exception. Following trends can be expensive especially in Spring Summer where the fabric and quality of the clothes are simply not suitable to Autumn Winter conditions.

Wide Collar Shirts have grown in popularity over the few past seasons as different shapes and silhouettes have moved to a more looser and less restrictive fit. In terms of shirts we are back in Cuba and Miami of the 1950’s moving into the 1960’s. The Wide Collar nicknamed The “Cuban Collar” is the “go-to” of Spring Summer 2017. Think JFK and Elvis Presley or Frank Woods from Call of Duty Black Ops.

I love this Cuban Collar Shirt from River Island and it is only €33. It ticks all the boxes and the print is understated enough to appeal to all men. This Shirt can be worn with jeans or trousers. You can buy it here.

The key to nailing this trend is choosing a printed short sleeve shirt and rolling up the sleeves. Add a white tee and wear it open for super casual but stylish look. Dare to be dapper and wear it with a suit!

If the Wide Collar Shirt is a step too far for you then stick with your normal collar printed shirts. The floral print is still going to be a big trend for Spring Summer. Style your floral print with a Suit or wear it casual with Jeans and Chelsea Boots. River Island carry a wide selection of floral Print Shirts. starting from €33. I love them! You can buy the shirt in the picture here.

The Iconic Denim Jacket has returned! All hail the King! For me, the Denim Jacket is a must-have piece. You can do so much with it. AW16 saw the borg collar Denim Jacket’s popularity soar. SS17 shows no signs of letting us out of our Denim Daze! Go for a slim fit jacket where possible.

I style my Denim Jacket with black or charcoal ripped skinny jeans and Chelsea Boots.

A simple white tee, blacked ripped jeans and a light wash Denim Jacket and you are good to go! The Denim Jacket is a great piece to invest in as you can use it for layering in Autumn coming into Spring. Other great looks are Printed or Striped Tees with you Denim Jacket.

This River Island Ripped Light Wash Denim Jacket looks great. Styled here with a hoodie and white tee with black jeans for a cool Spring look. Go for Ripped Denim Jacket for Summer and nail the Street Style trend which is very popular at the moment. This Denim Jacket is a bit expensive at €75 but I think it is worth the money as it is a unique piece! Buy it here.

One of the biggest trends regarding Denim Jackets at the moment is the resurgence of the Borg Collar Denim Jacket. If you don’t own one then you should definitely buy one. They look great with everything. The good news regarding the Borg Collar Denim Jacket is it will be used in Autumn Winter as much as Spring Summer! This one from River Island is certainly worth the investment!

It is styled nicely in the picture however you can wear it with ripped grey skinny jeans and a basic white tee or shirt for different look.

This trend is still going strong and shows no signs of going away anytime soon. The trend is appealing because of its comfort and practicality but also its interpretation. It is such a broad trend that you can’t really go wrong with it. What is Sports Luxe? I don’t think anyone knows. Wear a Suit with white Trainers and you have a Sports Luxe inspired outfit. Teaming a Track Jacket with Chinos and White Trainers works also. As does a sporty Bomber Jacket with Chinos or Suit Trousers. The SS17 interpration of this trend has seen smart shirts paired with joggers and formal shoes however that might be going to far for some.

I style my Sports Luxe outfits with a white trainers and in case a striped t-shirt. This outfit is from my HOW TO WEAR A SUIT WITH TRAINERS Post last year.

You can also style your Sports Luxe outfit with a short sleeve shirt. There is no wrong way to style Sports Luxe in my opinion just adhere to the description and you will be okay.

Staying on trend for Spring Summer means opting for one or two options of wide leg trousers. These have been popular for a few seasons. The popularity of the trend once again lies in its practicality for Summer. Worn in a relaxed fit, wide leg trousers can help you nail the formal side of a Sports Luxe look for example a white tee and trainers. Wearing smart trousers is “on trend” anyway so if the wide leg isn’t for you then choose a fit you like and use the elements of Sports Luxe to dress.

In terms of Suits the trend can be combined with Sports Luxe to nail some really hot looks! Checks and Squares are everywhere for SS17! Thank you Conor McGregor! I suggest going for a subtle Prince of Wales Check. The Trousers will work well with White Trainers to form the base of a Sports Luxe inspired outfit.

UP your suit game and check all the boxes in your workplace with this Suit from Burton Menswear. It is the perfect introduction to check pattern on your suit and is suitable for the office. This 3 piece sets you back €240 and you can buy it here.

Got a wedding coming up? Check out this masterpiece from Noose and Monkey! N and M are specialist at creating incredible suits. This one is no different. I love it! The suit is not cheap at €340 on the ASOS website BUT it is an investment for life. You can be buy it here.

Don’t let ladies have all the fun dress to impress with this slick super skinny suit from the ASOS brand of clothing. Standing out from the crowd never looked so in this eye-catching yet stylish 3 piece from everyone’s favourite online store, ASOS. You can buy it here!

So to recap….

Introduce different shapes to your outfits for example Cuban Collar Shirts and Wide Leg Trousers for more statement looks. Sports Luxe or the idea of teaming formal wear with more casual pieces isn’t going anywhere yet. In terms of colour tonal outfits in particular navy will be popular. Introduce dusty pink and stone hues into your outfits for example a pink shirt and stone chinos. Strategically used Camo pieces such as Bomber Jackets, T-Shirts, Vests and Swim Shorts are all welcome as we begin to move away from a minimalist look.

I hope you enjoyed this guide and it has provided inspiration for you Spring Summer Fashion endeavours!
